How Can I Worship God With Reverence and Joy?

Ask a follow-up in Clarity

Worship holds joy and reverence together because God is both your Father and your holy King.

Begin with who God is

Psalm 95 calls God “the Rock of our salvation,” “a great King,” and “our Maker” (Psalm 95:1–6).

That produces both responses:

  • Joy, because he has saved you and receives you.
  • Reverence, because he is the Creator and Lord of all.

Thanksgiving is a good doorway. Name specific gifts, mercies, and ways Christ has carried you.

Bring your whole self before him

Sing, pray, listen, kneel, lift your hands, or sit quietly.

The point is not performing the right posture. It is offering God an honest heart that says, “You are worthy; I belong to you.”

“Let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD our Maker” (Psalm 95:6).

Let joy be holy, not shallow

Christian joy is not pretending life is easy. It is confidence that, through Jesus, you are reconciled to God and held by him.

So worship can include glad songs and tears, celebration and confession.

“Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling” (Psalm 2:11).

Make room to hear him

Psalm 95 moves from singing and bowing to a summons: “Today, if you hear His voice” (Psalm 95:7).

Worship is not only speaking to God. Read Scripture slowly, receive it, and obey what he shows you.

Reverence bows before God’s holiness; joy rests in his grace. In Christ, you need not choose between them.
