Why Did Peter Stay When Others Walked Away From Jesus?
Ask a follow-up in ClarityPeter stayed because he trusted who Jesus was, even when he struggled with what Jesus said.
Why others left
After Jesus fed a crowd, he taught that he was the bread of life and that people must eat his flesh and drink his blood to have life (John 6:35, 51–54). Many disciples found this hard to accept. When Jesus did not soften the teaching, many stopped following him (John 6:60, 66).
Jesus then asked the Twelve whether they wanted to leave too.
Why Peter stayed
Peter answered, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life” (John 6:68). He did not claim to understand everything. He gave two reasons to remain:
- Jesus’ words give life. Peter had heard enough to know that walking away would mean leaving the one who could give what no one else could.
- Jesus is the Holy One of God. Peter and the others had come to believe that Jesus was not simply another teacher (John 6:69).
Peter’s faith was not perfect; later, he would deny knowing Jesus. But here he shows what trust can look like when a teaching is hard: staying with Jesus because he has come to know the one who is speaking.
