Why Were Peter and John So Bold About Jesus?
Ask a follow-up in ClarityPeter and John were bold because they had seen the risen Jesus and were filled with the Holy Spirit.
What made them speak that way
In Acts 4, they are standing before the same kind of leaders who helped reject Jesus. They are not arguing from cleverness or status; Peter says the healing happened “by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead” (Acts 4:10). That is the center of their boldness: Jesus is alive, vindicated by God, and still acting.
Why they were not afraid
- They had personal, eyewitness knowledge of Jesus’ death and resurrection.
- They had received the Holy Spirit, who gave them courage and words; Acts 4:8 says Peter was “filled with the Holy Spirit.”
- They had been with Jesus, and that changed them. The council noticed “these men had been with Jesus” (Acts 4:13).
What boldness means here
Their boldness was not swagger. It was calm refusal to hide the truth when pressure came. They could say, without backing down, that “there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).
So the reason is simple: they knew Jesus was Lord, they had seen him risen, and God’s Spirit made them fearless. That is the kind of courage the gospel creates.
