Why Did Mary Ask the Angel How This Would Happen?
Ask a follow-up in ClarityMary asked because Gabriel told her she would conceive a son, yet she was a virgin.
Her question was not unbelief
After hearing that her child would be the promised eternal King, Mary says:
“How can this be… since I am a virgin?” — Luke 1:34
She does not ask whether God can do it. She asks how it will happen, because conception normally requires a human father.
Her response differs from Zechariah earlier in Luke 1. He asked for proof after being told that his aged wife Elizabeth would bear a son; Mary receives Gabriel’s word and asks for understanding of its manner.
Gabriel reveals the miracle
Gabriel answers that the Holy Spirit will come upon her and “the power of the Most High will overshadow” her (Luke 1:35).
This is not presented as a human act, but as God’s creative, holy work. Therefore the child will be called “the Son of God.”
Mary’s final words show her faith:
“I am the Lord’s servant… May it happen to me according to your word.” — Luke 1:38
Her question is the honest question of a believer facing a promise beyond ordinary human possibility—and then yielding herself to God’s will.
