Why Does Peter Say Lying to the Spirit Is Lying to God?
Ask a follow-up in ClarityPeter says it because, in this scene, the Holy Spirit is not merely God’s power or influence—the Spirit is God.
What happened
Ananias and Sapphira sold land and presented only part of the money as though it were the whole amount.
Peter makes clear that they were free to keep the land and free to keep some proceeds: “Was it not at your disposal?” (Acts 5:4). Their sin was not failing to donate everything.
Their sin was a deliberate deception before the Spirit who was present and guiding Christ’s church.
Peter’s argument
Peter first says Ananias “lied to the Holy Spirit” (Acts 5:3).
Then he says, “You have not lied to men, but to God” (Acts 5:4).
The parallel is direct:
- lying to the Holy Spirit
- is lying to God
So Acts 5 is one of Scripture’s clearest affirmations that the Holy Spirit is truly divine.
Why this matters
The Spirit is personally involved: He can be lied to, grieved, resisted, and honored—not treated as an impersonal force. He knows the heart, and deceit before the church is ultimately deceit before God.
Ananias tried to manage appearances before people. Peter exposes the deeper reality: no religious performance can hide the truth from the living God.
