Why Did Jesus Defend Mary for Sitting at His Feet?

Ask a follow-up in Clarity

Jesus defended Mary because she was receiving what only he could give: his word.

The scene

Jesus is a guest in Martha’s home. Martha is working to provide hospitality, while Mary sits at Jesus’ feet and listens to him teach.

When Martha asks Jesus to send Mary back to help, Jesus answers gently:

“Mary has chosen the good portion, and it will not be taken away from her” (Luke 10:42).

What Jesus was not saying

Jesus was not condemning service, meals, or hospitality. Martha’s work mattered.

But Martha had become “worried and upset about many things” (Luke 10:41). Her serving had turned into anxious distraction, and she wanted to pull Mary away from Jesus to share the burden.

Why Mary’s choice mattered

To sit at a teacher’s feet was the posture of a disciple. Mary was not merely taking a break; she was learning from the Lord himself.

Jesus upheld her right to be his disciple.

“The good portion” means the lasting gift of knowing and hearing Christ. Food must be prepared again tomorrow; his word, received in faith, is not taken away.

Service is good. But it must flow from communion with Jesus, not replace it.
