Why Do I Hide from God When I Need Him Most?
Ask a follow-up in ClarityYou hide because shame tells you God is safest to avoid—just when he is the One you most need.
The first hiding place
After Adam and Eve disobeyed God, they heard him coming in the garden and hid among the trees. Adam explains: “I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself” (Genesis 3:8–10).
Sin had changed how they saw God, themselves, and each other.
- They felt exposed rather than secure.
- They feared being known.
- They shifted blame instead of honestly returning.
That pattern still lives in us. Failure can make prayer feel unbearable—not because God has become less merciful, but because we feel unworthy to come near.
God comes looking
God’s question, “Where are you?” in Genesis 3:9 was not because he lacked information. It was an invitation to stop hiding and answer him truthfully.
He already knows what you did, what you fear, and what you cannot fix. In Christ, he does not call you to clean yourself up before coming. “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).
A small way back
When you cannot manage a polished prayer, begin with the truth:
“Lord, I am hiding. I am afraid to be seen. Please help me come to you.”
That is already turning toward him. Jesus says that whoever comes to him, he “will never cast out” (John 6:37).
