Why Did Jesus Sing with His Disciples Before His Arrest?
Ask a follow-up in ClarityJesus sang before his arrest because worship was the fitting response to the covenant meal—and because he went willingly toward the cross trusting his Father.
The moment
Jesus had just shared the Passover meal with the disciples.
He gave them bread and wine as signs of his body and blood, “poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins” (Matthew 26:26–28). He knew betrayal, abandonment, suffering, and death were immediately ahead.
Then, “when they had sung a hymn,” they went out to the Mount of Olives (Matthew 26:30).
What they likely sang
At Passover, Jewish families commonly sang the Hallel Psalms—Psalms 113–118.
That means Jesus may have sung words such as:
“The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone” (Psalm 118:22).
and
“I shall not die, but live, and proclaim what the LORD has done” (Psalm 118:17).
We cannot prove the exact psalm, but the Passover setting makes these psalms very likely.
Why it matters
Jesus did not sing because the coming suffering was small.
He sang because God’s faithfulness was greater.
The hymn joined the disciples’ worship to Israel’s Passover hope: God delivers his people. Yet Jesus was about to fulfill that hope in a deeper way—not by escaping death, but by giving himself as the true Passover sacrifice.
He walked from the table to Gethsemane with praise on his lips and obedience in his heart.
