Why Do Christians Honor Mary?
Ask a follow-up in ClarityChristians honor Mary because God honored her in making her the mother of Jesus Christ, the incarnate Son of God.
What Scripture shows
When Mary visits Elizabeth, Elizabeth is filled with the Holy Spirit and calls her:
“Blessed are you among women” — Luke 1:42
Elizabeth also calls Mary “the mother of my Lord” (Luke 1:43). That title matters because Jesus is truly Lord—not merely a human teacher. Honoring Mary protects the confession that the child she bore is fully God and fully human.
Mary herself says, “All generations will call me blessed” (Luke 1:48). Christians therefore do not treat her as an ordinary figure to be ignored.
Honor is not worship
Worship belongs to God alone: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Mary is a redeemed human being who received God’s grace. In her song, she calls God “my Savior” (Luke 1:47). Christians honor her faith, humility, and unique calling; we do not make her divine or place her beside Christ as another savior.
Why her “yes” matters
When the angel announces Jesus’ birth, Mary receives God’s word in trust:
“I am the Lord’s servant… May it happen to me according to your word.” — Luke 1:38
She is therefore a model of faithful obedience. But the center is always Jesus: Mary points beyond herself to her Son, saying, “Do whatever He tells you” (John 2:5).
To honor Mary rightly is to praise the grace of God at work in her—and to confess clearly who Jesus is.
