When I’m Not Sure What I Believe, Who Is Jesus?

When your beliefs feel uncertain, Jesus does not become uncertain.

Who Jesus is

At Caesarea Philippi, people had many guesses about him—John the Baptist, Elijah, or a prophet. Jesus then asked his disciples, “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Christ” (Mark 8:27–29).

Jesus is not merely a teacher to evaluate or a spiritual guide among others.

He is:

  • the Christ: God’s promised King and Savior
  • the Son of God: truly divine, sharing the Father’s life
  • truly human: he knows weakness, grief, temptation, suffering, and death
  • the crucified and risen Lord: he gave himself for sinners and rose bodily from the dead

When you cannot hold onto certainty

Christian faith finally rests less on the strength of your grip on Jesus than on the faithfulness of Jesus toward you.

A father once brought his suffering son to Jesus and prayed, “I do believe; help my unbelief!” Jesus did not reject him for bringing mixed faith. He met him in mercy (Mark 9:24).

You can pray that honestly:

“Jesus, I am not sure what I believe. But if you are who you say you are, help me know you and trust you.”

The central Christian confession remains solid even in a season of questions:

Jesus Christ is Lord—the Savior who came for you, died for you, rose again, and does not turn away the weak who come to him.
