When Life Feels Meaningless, What Does Scripture Tell Me to Do?

Start here

When life feels meaningless, Scripture says: fear God, keep going in obedience, and remember that your life will answer to Him.

Ecclesiastes is honest about the ache. The Teacher looks at work, pleasure, wisdom, and success and keeps finding “vanity” — vapor, breath, something you cannot hold. He does not pretend the feeling is silly.

What to do

  • Fear God: treat Him as God, not as a side note. Ecclesiastes 12:13 says this is “the whole duty of man.”
  • Keep His commandments: do the next faithful thing in front of you, even when your feelings are flat.
  • Receive life as a gift, not a god: the book keeps pushing you away from trying to make created things carry ultimate meaning.
  • Remember judgment: Ecclesiastes 12:14 says God will bring every deed into account. Your life is not pointless if it belongs to Him.

What this means

Meaninglessness is often what life feels like when you try to find your center in things that cannot hold it. Ecclesiastes does not end with “figure it out”; it ends with reverence, obedience, and trust in God’s final justice.

And for Christians, that hope is not bare duty. The God who judges is also the God who gives wisdom, mercy, and resurrection life in Christ. So when life feels empty, do not wait to feel full before obeying. Turn to God, do the good in front of you, and let Him be the meaning you were made for.
