What Stood Between the Rich Man and Following Jesus?

Ask a follow-up in Clarity

His wealth stood between him and following Jesus—not simply because he had money, but because he could not let it go when Jesus called him.

The choice Jesus gave him

The man ran to Jesus asking what he must do to inherit eternal life. When Jesus named several commandments, the man said he had kept them since his youth.

Jesus looked at him and loved him. Then he told him to sell what he owned, give to the poor, and come follow him (Mark 10:17–21). Jesus put his possessions alongside the life he said he wanted.

What his sorrow revealed

The man left sorrowful because he had great wealth (Mark 10:22). He wanted eternal life, but he could not accept Jesus’ invitation at that cost.

  • His wealth offered security he was reluctant to surrender.
  • His obedience had not yet become trust in Jesus with everything.

Jesus’ command was personal and searching; the passage does not say that every disciple must sell every possession. It does show that following him cannot be fitted around whatever we refuse to release. The striking detail is that Jesus spoke this hard word in love. He was calling the man toward treasure in heaven, not merely asking him to lose what he had.
