What Did Jesus Mean by Eternal Life?

Ask a follow-up in Clarity

Eternal life is not merely life that lasts forever. It is knowing and sharing the life of God through Jesus Christ—beginning now and completed in resurrection.

Life received through Christ

Jesus defines it this way:

“This is eternal life: that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent” (John 17:3).

This “knowing” is covenant relationship: trusting Christ, belonging to him, and living reconciled to the Father.

In John 5:24, Jesus says the believer has eternal life already and has “crossed over from death to life.” It is a present gift, not only a future reward.

Both present and future

Eternal life includes:

  • Now: forgiveness, communion with God, the Holy Spirit’s renewing life, freedom from condemnation in Christ.
  • Future: the bodily resurrection and life in God’s restored creation (John 5:28–29; Romans 8:11).

So it does not mean escaping bodily existence for a vague spiritual afterlife. Christian hope is resurrection: whole persons made new in Christ.

The heart of it

Sin brings alienation from the God who is life. Jesus, through his death and resurrection, brings his people home to God.

Eternal life begins when you believe him—and it will never be taken away by death.
