When I Wonder Whether God Loves Me, What Does the Cross Show?
Ask a follow-up in ClarityThe cross shows that God’s love is not a vague feeling or a reward for your worthiness. It is God’s costly, decisive action for sinners.
What happened at the cross
Jesus, the sinless Son, was rejected, condemned, and crucified. He did not die because humanity had first become lovable enough.
“God proves His love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).
At Calvary, the Father gave the Son, and the Son freely gave himself. Jesus says, “Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13).
What it tells you personally
The cross does not say, “God might love you if you improve.”
It says: God has moved toward you in Christ at the very place your sin and need were most exposed.
- Your sin is serious enough that Christ died for it.
- God’s mercy is greater than your sin, because Christ gave himself for you.
- You are not invited to earn welcome; you are invited to receive it through faith in Christ.
“If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son… how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things?” (Romans 8:31–32).
When your heart doubts
Feelings may rise and fall, and suffering can make God seem distant. But the cross is God’s public, historical pledge: in Christ, he has not withheld himself from you.
Look there when self-accusation speaks loudest. The crucified and risen Jesus is not proof that you are abandoned; he is the proof that God’s love has come for you.
