What Did Jesus Mean When He Said, “Keep Watch”?

Ask a follow-up in Clarity

Jesus meant: live ready for his return, not sleepy, careless, or spiritually distracted.

What “keep watch” means

In Mark 13:33-37, Jesus has just said that no one knows the day or hour, not even the angels or the Son, only the Father. So “keep watch” means to stay alert because the timing is hidden.

It is not panic. It is not date-setting. It is faithful readiness.

What that looks like

  • Stay awake spiritually: don’t drift into sin, apathy, or false security.
  • Keep doing your assigned work: the master in the parable leaves each servant a task.
  • Live as if the Lord could return at any moment, because he could.

Jesus says the same thing again in another scene: “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day on which your Lord will come” (Matthew 24:42). Paul gives the same thrust: “Let us not sleep, as the others do, but let us remain awake and sober” (1 Thessalonians 5:6).

The point

“Keep watch” means faithful, alert, obedient living in the present, with your eyes open to Christ’s coming.

The right response is not fear, but readiness.
