What Does It Mean to Be Baptized Into Christ?
Ask a follow-up in ClarityBaptized into Christ means united to him in his death and resurrection.
What Paul means
In Romans 6:3-5, Paul says baptism is not just a ritual wash. It is the sign that you belong to Christ, have been joined to his saving death, and now share in his new life.
That is why he says we were “baptized into his death” and “buried with him” so that “we too may walk in newness of life” (Romans 6:3-4).
The heart of it
To be baptized into Christ means:
- your old life under sin is counted as ended with him
- you are marked off as belonging to him
- you now live from his resurrection life
- your body and future are tied to his victory
Paul says the same union another way in Galatians 3:27: “For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.”
What it is not
Baptism does not mean you became Christ.
It means you were joined to him, by faith, into the benefits of his saving work. The water does not replace Christ’s cross; it points to it.
Why it matters
If you are baptized into Christ, then your identity is no longer first “old self, old master, old guilt.” It is “with Christ.” That is why baptism calls for a changed life, not just a religious memory.
The Christian life begins here: with union to Jesus, death to sin, and life before God.
