When I Don't Understand a Bible Passage, Where Do I Begin?

Begin with the passage itself, not with a conclusion you hope to find.

A simple first approach

  1. Read the whole unit. Read the paragraph, scene, or chapter around the difficult verse. Ask: Who is speaking? To whom? What has happened?

  2. Name what you actually do not understand. Is it a word, an image, a command, the flow of the argument, or how it applies today? A precise question opens the text.

  3. Notice the kind of writing. Narrative, poetry, prophecy, proverb, parable, and letter communicate differently. Proverbs give wise general patterns; they are not always unconditional promises.

  4. Let clear Scripture help with unclear Scripture. Look for the same theme elsewhere, especially where it is explained more directly. Keep the passage in the Bible’s larger story of creation, sin, Israel, Christ, and new creation.

  5. Use trustworthy help humbly. A study Bible, solid commentary, pastor, or mature Christian can help with history, language, and difficult interpretations. Nehemiah 8:8 shows this good pattern: the Law was read and “explained… so that the people could understand.”

Pray honestly

Ask the Lord for light, not merely information:

“Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things from Your law” (Psalm 119:18).

You do not need to force an answer immediately. Read carefully, pray, ask good questions, and receive help within Christ’s Church. Understanding often grows through patient return to the text.
