When My Faith Feels Routine, How Do I Stay Connected to Jesus?
Ask a follow-up in ClarityStaying connected to Jesus is less about keeping a spiritual feeling alive and more about returning to him as your life-giving source.
Receive before you perform
Jesus says, “Remain in me” (John 15:4). A branch does not create its own life; it receives life from the vine.
So when faith feels routine, begin simply:
- Tell Jesus the truth: “I feel distracted, dry, or mechanical.”
- Read a small passage slowly, asking, “What are you showing me about yourself?”
- Pray his words back to him, even when your emotions lag behind.
Dryness is not proof that he has left you. Often it is an invitation to seek him more honestly.
Build ordinary rhythms
Connection grows through repeated, concrete habits:
- Scripture: let Christ’s words “remain in you” (John 15:7), even a few verses at a time.
- Prayer: speak plainly, then be quiet long enough to listen and rest before God.
- Worship and church: Christ meets and strengthens his people together, not only in private.
- Obedience: act on the next thing you know he has called you to do. Love becomes tangible in obedience (John 15:9–10).
Remember what “fruit” is
Jesus does not call you to manufacture impressive spiritual results. He calls you to remain.
The Father prunes fruitful branches too (John 15:2): seasons that feel less exciting may still be seasons of deeper roots. Keep bringing your ordinary life to Christ—your work, temptations, relationships, and gratitude.
Faithfulness in the routine is not the opposite of intimacy with Jesus. It is often where intimacy quietly takes root.
