How Can I Resist the Devil Without Becoming Afraid of Him?

Ask a follow-up in Clarity

Resist the devil by turning toward God, not by staring at the devil.

Start with God’s authority

James gives the order: “Submit yourselves… to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7).

The command is not:

  • Study every possible attack.
  • Become anxious about spiritual danger.
  • Prove your strength against evil.

It is first: belong yourself afresh to God.

Jesus has already defeated the devil through His death and resurrection. Hebrews says that through death Christ destroyed “him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil” (Hebrews 2:14). You resist as someone under Christ’s lordship, not as someone trying to survive alone.

What resistance looks like

Resisting is usually very ordinary:

  • Reject a lie with truth from Scripture.
  • Refuse temptation rather than negotiating with it.
  • Confess sin quickly and receive Christ’s forgiveness.
  • Pray simply: “Lord Jesus, keep me and lead me.”
  • Stay connected to worship, Christian fellowship, and wise believers.

When accusation comes, remember: Satan is called “the accuser” (Revelation 12:10), but Christ is your advocate before the Father (1 John 2:1).

Do not confuse vigilance with fear

Peter says to be sober-minded and alert, because the devil seeks to devour (1 Peter 5:8–9). But Peter immediately says to “resist him, standing firm in your faith.”

Watchfulness means alert trust—not panic.

“The one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world” (1 John 4:4).

Fear grows when evil becomes the center of your attention. Faith grows when Christ does. Keep your eyes on the victorious Lord, and resist the devil calmly by refusing his lies and drawing near to God.
