When My Mind Won't Slow Down, How Can I Pray?

You do not need to quiet your mind before you come to God. Bring Him the noise.

Start with honest, simple words

Psalm 62:8 says, “Pour out your hearts before Him; God is our refuge.”

Try praying exactly what is happening:

“Father, my thoughts are racing. I cannot sort them out, but You see them all. Be my refuge right now.”

Do not wait until you can pray beautifully. Restlessness itself can become the prayer.

Give your mind one small place to rest

Use a short phrase from Scripture, slowly repeated:

  • “My hope comes from Him” (Psalm 62:5).
  • “The Lord is near” (Philippians 4:5).
  • “Jesus, have mercy on me.”
  • “Into Your hands, Lord.”

Breathe naturally; do not make the technique the point. Each time your mind runs off, gently return to the words—not with shame, but with trust.

Let the thoughts become requests

Name only the next thought that presses in:

  • “Lord, I am worried about ___.”
  • “Give me wisdom for ___.”
  • “I release what I cannot control.”
  • “Keep me through this night.”

Then pause. Silence is not failure; it is part of placing yourself before the God who already knows.

Christ does not ask you to arrive composed. He invites the weary to come to Him, and He gives rest (Matthew 11:28–29).
