When I Feel Overwhelmed, How Can I Pray?

Ask a follow-up in Clarity

When you are overwhelmed, pray honestly and simply—God does not need polished words.

Begin where you are

Jesus himself prayed under crushing sorrow in Gethsemane. He told the Father plainly what he feared: “Take this cup from Me,” and then entrusted himself to the Father’s will (Mark 14:32–36).

You can begin with:

“Father, I am overwhelmed. I do not know what to do. Please help me.”

A simple pattern

  • Name it: “This situation feels too heavy.”
  • Ask: “Give me wisdom, strength, peace, and the next faithful step.”
  • Release it: “I place what I cannot control into your hands.”
  • Remain: Sit quietly for a moment, even if your mind is still racing.

Philippians 4:6–7 calls us to bring every request to God, with thanksgiving; his peace guards us in Christ—not always by removing the burden at once, but by holding us within it.

Pray the words you have

If you cannot form your own prayer, use Scripture:

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1).

Or simply repeat:

“Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me.” “Abba, Father, help me.” “Your will be done; keep me close to you.”

The Holy Spirit also helps when words fail: “the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words” (Romans 8:26).

You do not have to carry the whole future in prayer. Bring God this moment, this burden, and this next breath.
