Why Should I Pray for Someone I Find Hard to Love?
Ask a follow-up in ClarityPray for them because love can begin as a choice before it feels like affection.
Why Jesus asks this
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus speaks to people who have heard that they should love their neighbors but hate their enemies. He calls them further: “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 5:43–44).
His reason is the Father’s generosity. God gives sun and rain to both the good and the evil (Matthew 5:45). Praying for someone difficult is one way to imitate that generosity without pretending their actions were good.
What prayer can do
- It asks God to care for them, even when you struggle to.
- It gives you room to name your hurt honestly instead of letting resentment speak for you.
- It opens your heart to God’s help; you do not have to manufacture warm feelings first.
You can pray simply: “Lord, you know what happened. Please do what is good for them, and help me respond with wisdom.”
Praying for someone does not require trusting them or staying where you are being harmed. You can pray for their good and still keep a necessary boundary.
