Why Did Jesus Ask the Healed Man If He Believed in the Son of Man?

Ask a follow-up in Clarity

Jesus asked because physical sight was meant to lead this man to spiritual sight: faith in Jesus himself.

What had just happened

Jesus had healed a man born blind. The man then stood before hostile religious leaders, who rejected both his testimony and Jesus; eventually they threw him out (John 9:1–34).

When Jesus heard this, he went looking for him.

That pursuit matters: Jesus did not merely restore the man’s eyes and leave him there. He brought him to the fuller gift—knowing and worshiping the One who healed him.

Why “the Son of Man”?

“Son of Man” is Jesus’ own messianic title, drawing especially on Daniel 7:13–14: the heavenly figure who receives everlasting authority and a kingdom.

So Jesus’ question, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” (John 9:35), was not asking whether the man believed in an abstract religious idea.

He was asking:

Will you put your trust in God’s promised King—the One who has authority to save and judge?

The healed man had already defended Jesus as a man from God. But he did not yet know the healer’s full identity. When Jesus revealed, “You have seen Him; He is the One speaking with you” (John 9:37), the man responded, “Lord, I believe,” and worshiped him (John 9:38).

The point of the question

Jesus drew out a personal confession of faith.

  • The man received physical sight.
  • He came to recognize Jesus with spiritual sight.
  • He moved from receiving a miracle to believing in and worshiping Christ.

John 9 contrasts him with the Pharisees: the blind man comes to see, while those claiming clear spiritual vision refuse the Light standing before them.
