Clarity answer
When I Don't Know What to Pray, How Can I Begin?
Ask a follow-up in ClarityBegin honestly, not impressively: God already knows what is in you.
A simple way to start
Say one sentence like:
“Father, I’m here. I don’t know what to say, but You know me.”
Then pause. You do not have to fill the silence.
Romans 8:26–27 meets exactly this moment: when we do not know how to pray, the Holy Spirit helps our weakness and intercedes for us. Your wordlessness is not a barrier to God.
Give God what is actually there
If words begin to come, name only what is true:
- “I am tired.”
- “I am afraid.”
- “I am grateful.”
- “I need help.”
- “Forgive me.”
- “Show me what to do.”
Prayer is not performing the right feelings. It is turning toward your Father in truth.
Let Scripture lend you words
When your own words run out, pray a short biblical prayer:
“The LORD is my shepherd” (Psalm 23:1). “Create in me a clean heart” (Psalm 51:10). “God, have mercy on me, a sinner” (Luke 18:13). “Your will be done” (Matthew 6:10).
Even repeating one line slowly can be real prayer.
Jesus taught his disciples to begin, “Our Father in heaven” (Matthew 6:9). Begin there: you are speaking to a Father who receives you, through the Son, with the Spirit’s help.
