How Did Jesus Answer Satan in the Wilderness?
Ask a follow-up in ClarityJesus answered Satan with faithful obedience to God’s written word.
Three temptations, three answers
After forty days of fasting, Jesus was hungry. Satan first urged Him to turn stones into bread and prove He was God’s Son.
Jesus answered from Deuteronomy 8:3:
“Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4).
Satan then quoted Psalm 91, tempting Jesus to throw Himself from the temple and force God to rescue Him.
Jesus answered from Deuteronomy 6:16:
“Do not put the Lord your God to the test” (Matthew 4:7).
Finally, Satan offered Jesus the kingdoms of the world if Jesus would worship him.
Jesus answered from Deuteronomy 6:13:
“Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only” (Matthew 4:10).
What Jesus shows us
Jesus did not bargain with Satan or accept Satan’s distorted use of Scripture. He answered each lie with God’s word rightly understood and lived in trustful obedience.
And He finally commanded:
“Away from Me, Satan!” (Matthew 4:10).
The Son refused every shortcut around the Father’s will—and went on to win His kingdom through the cross, not by worshiping evil.
