When Violence in the World Scares Me, How Can I Follow Jesus?
Ask a follow-up in ClarityFollowing Jesus in a violent world means refusing fear’s command while entrusting yourself to the risen King.
Begin with Jesus’ peace
Jesus does not deny that the world is dangerous. He tells his disciples, “In the world you will have tribulation,” then adds, “take courage; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).
His peace is not pretending nothing is wrong. It is knowing that violence, evil, and death do not have the final word because Christ has risen.
When fear rises, pray simply:
“Lord Jesus Christ, keep me near you. Guard those in danger. Make me faithful, not ruled by fear.”
Practice the way of the peacemaker
Jesus calls peacemakers blessed in Matthew 5:9. That does not mean passivity toward evil or indifference to victims.
It means you can:
- refuse hatred, revenge, and dehumanizing speech
- pray concretely for people threatened by violence, including enemies
- seek truthful information without feeding on panic
- help the vulnerable through generosity, hospitality, advocacy, or service
- support justice that restrains evil without celebrating cruelty
Let fear drive you toward God, not away
The Psalms give Christians words when the news feels overwhelming: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in times of trouble” (Psalm 46:1).
You are not responsible to carry the world’s terror alone. Bring it to the Father, remain rooted in the Church’s worship and fellowship, and keep doing the next faithful good in front of you.
Christ’s command is not “never feel afraid,” but “do not let your hearts be troubled” (John 14:27).
