Why Do I Feel Split Between the Person I Am and Want to Be?

Ask a follow-up in Clarity

You feel split because sin has not been fully erased yet, but your deepest self has already begun to want God.

The split is real

Romans 7:15-25 names the experience plainly: “I do not do the good I want to do.” Paul is not pretending the struggle is small. He describes a person who truly wants what is right, yet finds another force at work.

That is why the conflict feels so sharp:

  • your mind can delight in God’s law
  • your desires can be sincere
  • and still your flesh can pull the other way

This does not mean you are fake

Paul does not say, “You are nothing but your worst act.” He says sin is “living in me” and warring against him, while his “inner being” still delights in God’s law (Romans 7:17, 22-23).

So the split is not proof that you are beyond grace. It is often proof that grace has begun to wake you up.

The Christian answer is not self-fixing

Paul does not end with frustration. He ends with rescue:

“Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God, through Jesus Christ our Lord!” Romans 7:24-25

Your hope is not that you will become two perfect people by force of will. Your hope is Christ, who forgives, frees, and keeps remaking you.

What to do with the split

  • tell the truth to God, not a polished version
  • do not confuse temptation with identity
  • keep turning back when you fall
  • feed the desires you want to grow: Scripture, prayer, repentance, fellowship

The divided heart is painful, but it is not the end of the story. In Christ, the part of you that longs for holiness is already a sign of where God is leading you.
