When My Life Feels Crowded, How Can Fasting Help Me Seek God?
Ask a follow-up in ClarityFasting can make space for God by turning a bodily hunger into a repeated invitation to pray.
What fasting is for
Jesus assumes his disciples will fast—“when you fast”—but warns against using it to be seen by people (Matthew 6:16–18).
The point is not to impress God, punish yourself, or earn spiritual closeness.
It is to seek your Father in secret.
When life is crowded, fasting says: “I need God more than I need to keep every appetite immediately satisfied.”
A simple way to begin
Choose a modest fast—perhaps one meal, or a particular comfort such as social media for a set time.
Each time you notice the absence:
- Name what is crowding your heart: hurry, fear, noise, control, distraction.
- Pray simply: “Father, I am hungry for You. Help me seek You.”
- Read a short passage slowly, such as Psalm 63:1 or Matthew 6:16–18.
- Let the hunger call you back to God rather than merely enduring it.
Keep the focus right
Fasting does not empty your life for emptiness’ sake.
It clears a little room for attention, repentance, gratitude, and dependence. If it makes you irritable, proud, or consumed with rules, bring even that honestly to God. The hidden Father sees you—and welcomes you.
If food fasting is unwise because of health, pregnancy, a history of disordered eating, or necessary medication, choose another real abstinence instead.
