When People Twist Faith for Power, How Should I Respond?
Ask a follow-up in ClarityDon’t copy their methods; follow Jesus’ way.
When faith gets twisted into control, Jesus does not tell His people to grab power back by the same spirit. In Mark 10:42-45, He contrasts worldly rulers who “lord it over” others with His own pattern: greatness as service, leadership as slavery to all, and authority shaped by the cross.
How to respond
-
Stay anchored in truth. Don’t let abuse make you cynical about God. Test teaching by Scripture, not by charisma, fear, or status.
-
Refuse the power game. Jesus forbids the domination style of the nations: “It shall not be this way among you” (Mark 10:43). Christian authority is never meant to crush, flatter, or exploit.
-
Tell the truth plainly. Name manipulation, greed, and spiritual abuse for what they are. Love does not mean silence.
-
Keep serving without surrendering discernment. Jesus calls you to serve like Him, not to become passive. Service and wisdom belong together.
-
Protect the vulnerable. When leaders use faith to gain money, control, or admiration, the faithful response is to guard the weak and, when needed, step away.
The pattern is the cross
Jesus Himself had real authority, yet He used it to give His life “as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45). That means the Christian answer to corrupt power is not revenge, but cruciform faithfulness: truth, humility, courage, and costly love.
You do not honor Christ by imitating the people who misuse His name. You honor Him by refusing their spirit and walking in His.
