When I Doubt My Salvation, Where Can I Find Assurance?

Assurance rests first on Christ’s promise and work, not on how secure you feel today.

Look to the Son

John writes to believers that God has given eternal life “in His Son” (1 John 5:11–13).

So ask the central question:

Am I trusting Jesus Christ—crucified and risen—as my Savior and Lord?

If you come to him, his promise is not fragile: “Whoever comes to Me I will never cast out” (John 6:37). Salvation is received by grace, not earned by a spotless record or sustained by perfect emotions (Ephesians 2:8–9).

Notice God’s work in you

Feelings rise and fall. But God also gives real signs of life:

  • You confess Jesus as Lord and cling to him.
  • Sin troubles you, and you return to God rather than making peace with it.
  • You desire to obey, love other Christians, and grow—even imperfectly.

These do not purchase salvation. They are fruit of belonging to Christ. When you sin, confess it plainly; “He is faithful and just to forgive us” (1 John 1:9).

Bring your doubt into the light

A doubting believer should not hide from God.

Pray simply: “Lord Jesus, I believe; help my unbelief” (Mark 9:24). Then return to the gospel: Christ died for sinners, rose bodily, and intercedes for his people (Romans 8:34).

Your grip on Christ may feel weak. His grip on his sheep is not: “No one can snatch them out of My hand” (John 10:28).
